KARACHI, Nov 12: People residing on either side of Lyari's D.D. Chaudhry Road, Bismillah Colony and Lyari telephone exchange, have been without water for more than three months.
The hard-hit apartment buildings in the area include Bhutto House, Baitul Hashim, Zeeshan Arcade, Haji Sualeh Building, Yaqoob Sonara building, Irshad Manzil, Naz Chambers, Gul Hassan House, D.D. Chaudhry Road, Lyari Exchange and Bismillah Colony.
Office-bearers of the affected localities' mohalla committees deplored that although they had apprised the KWSB officials of their lingering water issue through as many as 31 letters, none of them had, so far, bothered, to rectify the fault responsible for suspension of their supply.
"Isn't it an irony that the KWSB officials have even ignored the Sindh chief secretary's directives concerning restoration of water supply to us," remarked a senior resident of the locality, Mr Aziz Khatri.
Accusing officials concerned of not taking any measures for restoring the water supply, office-bearers of the mohalla committee alleged that as a matter of fact, officials concerned were more interested in minting money, instead of resolving the lingering water issue.
They also alleged that on one hand, residents of Lyari's D.D. Chaudhry Road and its adjacent localities, which fell under the jurisdiction of Baghdadi's Union Council No 5, were deprived of water since July 31, while on the other hand the KWSB officials were busy in providing illegal connections to multi-storeyed buildings and other commercial concerns.
They demanded of the Sindh chief minister to direct the KWSB officials to restore their supply without any further delay, expressing fears that they would otherwise remain without water even during Eid days.
SHORTAGE: Complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from the residents of Orangi Town's Union Council No 9, Saeedabad, Shershah, Manghopir, Mithadar and Haquani Chowk.
