SCBA chief criticizes uniform bill

ISLAMABAD, Nov 1: The newly-elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Qazi Jameel, on Monday said holding of two posts by President Gen Pervez Musharraf was against the fundamental structure of the Constitution which could not be changed by a law or any amendment.

"It is not good for the credibility of the president himself to hold two offices and even if he (Gen Musharraf) is a constitutional president, he should not retain a post which is not within the constitutional norms," he said while talking to reporters soon after assuming the office of Supreme Court Bar Association president.

Qazi Jameel has been elected as the Supreme Court Bar Association president for 2004- 05 after securing 764 votes out of a total of 982.

He said the objective resolution had already explained about the fundamental structure of the Constitution by stating that the power of state would be exercized through the chosen representatives of the people and the Constitution could not be amended for any individual.

About the decision of the previous association to hold mock trial of those who trampled the Constitution, he said he was bound by the decision of the action committee of the Pakistan Bar Council and would accept whatever was decided.
