KARACHI: Markets remain closed after activist's killing

KARACHI, Nov 1: Shops and businesses in Gulbahar and Rizvia Society remained suspended on Monday after the killing of a Muttahida activist on late Sunday night.

Syed Iftikhar Ali, 30, former unit chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, was sitting near a cafe near Khajji ground when unknown suspects on a motorcycle opened fire on him as a result Iftikhar and two others suffered injuries.

All the injured were taken to Abbasi Hospital where Iftikhar was pronounced dead.

Enraged people ransacked the hospital premises as they thought that the injured were not being properly looked after. The injured were later taken to a private hospital for treatment.

On Monday morning, area people set a bus of route (2-K) on fire near Rizvia Society Imambargah. The sanitary market located in Golimar also remained closed during the day.

Police said the killing appeared to be a target killing rather than an attempt of dacoity.

SHOT DEAD: A auto-rickshaw driver was shot dead by unknown suspects in Azizabad on Monday.

Police said Zafar Ali Shah, 50, was passing through Azizabad (Block-3) when unknown suspects riding a motorcycle opened fire at him and escaped.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. His body was taken to JPMC for legal formalities.

ACCIDENT: A coach was set on fire by people near Nagin Chowrangi when it hit a young boy and injured him in a road accident.

Mohsin Kamal, 20, was injured when he was hit by a speeding coach (PE-4303).

STUDENT DIES: An activist of the Pakhtoon Students Federation died during treatment in a private hospital on Sunday night.

Police said several students were injured when two student groups - Pakhtoon Student Federation and the APMSO- clashed with each other in the Urdu University on Saturday.

Police said Masood, belonging to the PSF, who suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Liaquat National Hospital died during treatment on Sunday night.
