Sonia likely to visit Pakistan in December

By Mahmood Zaman

LAHORE, Oct 27: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz's scheduled visit to India in November will be followed by a flurry of visits of political leaders and senior government officials on both sides of the political divide.

The president of the Indian National Congress, Sonia Gandhi, according to the Pakistan High Commission sources in New Delhi, has accepted a formal invitation by Islamabad for a visit. She is due here some time in December as a goodwill gesture for the advancement of the peace process which, both sides feel, is going on satisfactorily.

Indian foreign minister Kanwar Natwar Singh will, according to the sources, visit Pakistan twice before the year-end. He will be accompanying Ms Sonia Gandhi and also pay an independent visit to Islamabad. As already reported, a key leader of the Bhartiya Janata Party, Lal Kishan Advani, will visit Pakistan before the end of this year.

According to the sources, Prime Minister Aziz is due to review the progress of the first round of the composite dialogue for peace between the two countries with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his team and mark the beginning of the second round of talks on an eight-point agenda which includes Kashmir.
