KARACHI, Oct 22: Sindh is going to reap a record cotton crop this season due to effective use of water and proper crop management. This was stated by Sindh Minister for Food and Agriculture Arif Mustafa Jatoi while chairing the last meeting of Cotton Crop Management Committee here on Thursday.
Besides representatives of growers and private companies, the meeting was attended by functionaries of different departments. The Minister told the meeting that the Federal Government had set the target of 2.4 million bales for Sindh, which was perceived as ambitious. So far 40pc target has been achieved while it is expected to cross 2.7 million marks this season.
Arif Jatoi appreciated the efforts and contribution of the Committee members and grower's representatives and said such good results would not have been possible without active coordination between agriculture department and growers.
He expressed the hope that this coordination would continue to meet the challenges. The minister noted with satisfaction that this year only scanty pest attacks were reported and growers were able to avoid a potential loss, which is indicative of increased awareness level regarding application of pesticide in farming community.
He said the economic use of water was also very effective despite its shortage and results were managed to be achieved. The Minister also commended the role of electronic and print media in educating the farmers. -APP
