BADIN, Oct 21: District Nazim Sardar Kamal Khan Chang has sought support of the World Bank in poverty alleviation efforts by the district government.
The district nazim was briefing a World Bank delegation, comprising Hamid Mukhtar, Maniela Ferro, Deepak Mishra and Shaheen Malik, on causes of poverty in the district.
He regretted that the Asian Development Bank and other financing agencies had sanctioned a huge amount for schemes of flood canals which proved to be counter productive.
The nazim said Badin was a suitable place for setting up industries. He said people of the district should be provided with jobs and local fishermen of the coastal area be given fishing rights.
The World Bank delegation collected facts about poverty in the Badin district.
It was noted that acute shortage of water, improper planning, poor governance and information gap among people contributed towards high poverty ratio in the district.
Mr Mukhtar said the delegation would present their report to the senior Sindh minister on Friday.
DCO Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah said Badin needed attention of donor agencies so that living standard of people could be improved.
