GUJRANWALA, Oct 20: The DIG on Wednesday suspended an SHO and investigation officer from service on the charge of killing a youth in custody.
DPO Arif Mushtaq ordered an inquiry against both the police officials and inducted Civil Lines DSP as an inquiry officer.
Waqas Ahmad of Fatumand was severely tortured by his rivals Ghulam Muhammad and his accomplices in the police station over an enmity. But the SHO registered an FIR against Waqas under section 452 and 506 PPC instead of removing him to hospital for his critical condition.
However, he was shifted to the Civil Hospital when his condition was aggravated where MO Dr Arshad could not provide him medical aid in time. As a result, Waqas succumbed to his injuries.
Later, residents and women heirs of deceased demonstrated and took out a procession against the police to protest the death in custody. They also chanted slogans against the police on the second consecutive day here on Sialkot Road and outside offices of senior police officers.
Taking a prompt action, DIG Altaf Qamer suspended Civil Lines SHO Usman Haider Gujjar and IO Zulfikar Ali Virk and issued them show-cause notices.
When contacted, the SHO and IO concerned were still working as usually.
INDUCTED: District and sessions judge Javed Iqbal on Wednesday inducted four special judicial magistrates to supervise and conduct raids to control prices of essential commodities.
It was stated that the Punjab government and Lahore High Court also approved the induction of these magistrates. The DSJ allotted Gujranwala city and Sadar tehsil to judicial magistrate Muhammad Zaman Khan, Gujranwala tehsil, city and Sadar to judicial magistrate Taseer Ahmad, Naushera Virkan tehsil and Kamoki tehsil to judicial magistrate Fayyaz Ahmad Khan and Wazirabad tehsil to judicial magistrate Manzoor Ahmad Goraya.
All the designated magistrates have been directed to submit their daily progress report to court.
BAILED OUT: An SHO, who was arrested by Kamoki police for killing an accused in lock-up some five days ago, was bailed out by a local court when the complainant changed her statement on Wednesday.
The police had taken one Tariq into custody on suspicion of a theft and later tortured him to death during an interrogation. While the police claimed that he committed suicide. However, DPO Arif Mushtaq got arrested SHO and five other policemen.
