PESHAWAR, Oct 20: District and tehsil nazims of the NWFP here on Wednesday threatened to resign en-bloc, if the National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) did not restore their administrative and financial powers by Nov 25.
They also condemned the "irresponsible attitude of the NRB and the NWFP government" towards the local government representatives in the province and asked to stop victimization of the public representatives.
A joint meeting of various district, tehsil and town nazims was held here, which was presided over by district nazim Nowshera Pervez Khattak.
City district nazim, Peshawar, Azam Afridi, district nazims Chitral, Bannu, Charsadda, Mardan and various tehsil and town nazims also attended the meeting, said a press release.
Criticizing victimization of the district nazims, the meeting demanded that the NWFP government and the NRB should restore powers and functions of the district governments in accordance with the Local Government Ordinance, 2001.
It was decided that if powers of the districts, tehsil and town councils were not restored by Nov 25, the nazims from across the province would hold long march from Peshawar to Islamabad and would also tender en block resignations.
The meeting observed that the NRB was not fulfilling its legal and constitutional responsibilities to strengthen the local government system in the province.
The meeting convened next meeting in Peshawar on Nov 25 in which future line of action will be discussed.
