KARACHI: Students protest against privatization

KARACHI, Oct 20: The students of St Patrick's and St Joseph's colleges on Wednesday held a protest demonstration at the Karachi Press Club against a notification issued with regard to privatization of the two colleges.

Carrying banners and placards inscribed with demands, students, mainly activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba, chanted slogans against the Sindh Education Minister, Dr Hamida Khuhro, and asked for immediately halting the process of denationalization.

Speaking to participants of the protest demonstration, the Secretary General, Islami Jamiat Talaba, Karachi, Osama Shafique, praised the city government for its resistance in handing over these two institutions to previous owners.

According to him, orders for privatizing both the said educational institutions came directly from the United States to President Musharraf, and the Sindh government was not courageous enough to refuse these directives. - PPI
