Comprehensive UN reforms urged
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 29: Foreign Minister Khurshid M. Kasuri said on Tuesday that vast majority of the United Nations members support expansion of the UN Security Council in the non-permanent category and there was no consensus on the permanent category.
In a statement following the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) ministerial meeting on the sidelines of UN General Assembly session, he said that UN reforms should be comprehensive and must address the Council's composition, working methods and decision making.
He stressed that the expansion of the Council's membership should enhance its representativeness and that it should be limited to new non-permanent members. Mr Kasuri also met Anand Panyarachun, former prime minister of Thailand, who is chairman of the high-level panel on threats, challenges and change, set up by the Secretary General of the United Nations.
