KARACHI, Sept 28: The Chief Controller of Karachi Building Control Authority, Brig A.S. Nasir has said that there is a vast room for human welfare in nuclear engineering and, therefore, peaceful use of nuclear technology and promotion of nuclear education is essential.

He was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of a short course on "nuclear engineering" held under the auspices of Institute of Engineers Pakistan. The course was organized in cooperation with the Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering KANUPP and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia.

Taking part in the course, the experts of Nuclear Power Complex spoke on different aspects of nuclear technology. Brig A S Nasir called for formulation of a syllabus for future engineers keeping the international situation in view and may commensurate with the coming day conditions.

President, Institution of Engineers M P Gangwani in his welcome address said nuclear technology is both for war and peace and it is now left for its users how they make use of it.

He said while power shortage has enhanced its utility all the more, nuclear energy plays an important role towards environmental protection. Chief Scientific Officer of KANUPP Dr Khalid M. Bukhari said that nuclear technology is a vast field having links with all branches of engineering, including chemical, electrical, electronics and physics.

Engineer I. H. Siddiqi addressing the course technical session said although nuclear technology is the technology of war and peace, it is more used during peace time. The experts told the workshop that in the world, 16 per cent power is produced by nuclear power plants.

Lithonia and France has the highest number of plants while Pakistan has only two. Iftab Islam, Zuhra Mukhtar, S. Raza Amir, Reehan Siddiqi delivered lectures of the basic nuclear ideology, nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear power reactor, uranium processing, etc. -APP
