GUJRANWALA, Sept 22: Trader organizations demonstrated against the "unjustified system of taxation" and notices issued by the Gujranwala Development Authority (GDA) and excise and taxation department thereunder.

Traders marched up to the city tehsil council and met city Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad in this regard. They chanted slogans against GDA and threatened to go on shutter down strike and besiege tax offices if the notices were not withdrawn.

Earlier, speaking at a meeting held here on Wednesday, Anjuman Tajran Model Town president Khawaja Muhammad Naeem and representatives of trade organizations Kaleem Butt, Malik Ijaz Ahmad, Arshed Mahmood, Ehsan Ahmad, Arif Shah, Malik Hassan, Saeed Ahmad and Muhammad Asgher said that the GDA was collecting taxes without any justification while the inspectors were harassing them after issuing challan.

KILLED: Two dacoits killed an elderly woman and injured her husband on resistance during a dacoity bid in Model Town here on Wednesday. The armed bandits entered the house by scaling the boundary wall.

The intruders held Kishwer Bibi (65) and her husband Sikander Khan (70) hostage, tied the couple with ropes and collected Rs20,000 in cash and jewellery. Before fleeing, the bandits beat them up with clubs and bricks when they raised an alarm. They were rushed to the local DHQ Hospital where Kishwer died while her husband was stated to be in critical condition.

Meanwhile, a couple who sustained acid burn injuries some one month ago in Sabzi Mandi area succumbed to their injuries at the Mayo Hospital in Lahore. Ashraf Bhatti and his wife were asleep in their house when some unidentified culprits had entered the house and poured acid on them.

EXONERATED: A judicial inquiry into the killing of a prisoner exonerated jail superintendent Shaukat Feroze, deputy superintendent Chaudhry Asgher and the medical officer from the charges levelled against them here on Wednesday.

Muzammil had been killed by another prisoner Saleem in the jail some two weeks ago. Special judicial magistrate Sheikh Ghulam Mustafa had held jail officials responsible for the killing of the inmate in his inquiry report. While the district and sessions judge ordered the judicial inquiry and inducted ADSJ Nazir Cajana as inquiry officer.
