KARACHI, Sept 21: A six-inch-dia pipeline passing through North Nazimabad's Block-L burst on Tuesday. Water gushing out from the pipeline spread on a couple of streets and the main road causing hindrance in the flow of vehicular traffic and inconvenience to pedestrians.
Area residents complained that although the pipeline had been leaking for the last fortnight, the KWSB officials concerned did not take measures to repair it despite that a number of complaints were lodged with them in this regard.
"Had the pipeline been repaired when it started leaking about two weeks back water shortage had not been created in the localities hooked to it," they added. However, KWSB executive engineer told Dawn that the pipeline which was damaged by a tanker had been repaired after affixing a clamp around it and the localities hooked to it would start getting normal water supply from Wednesday.
SHORTAGE: Complaints of persisting water shortage continued to pouring in newspaper offices from different parts of the city on Tuesday. Most of such complaints have been received from those residing in the vicinity of PECHS E-Market, Clifton's Block-2, Kharadar, Baghdadi's D.D. Chaudhry Road, Orangi Town's Union Council 9 and Bahadurabad No 3.
Residents of the affected localities deplored that the acute water shortage had become a matter of routine and KWSB officials had not yet managed to help solve the problem on a permanent basis.
DEATH TRAP: The directives of KWSB's managing director, relating to covering of all manholes, have been ignored by the officials concerned. Although the KWSB managing director, Brig Iftekhar Haider, had instructed the officials to ensure that all open manholes must be covered prior to monsoon season, a large number of manholes are still uncovered. Presence of open manholes on pavements and thoroughfares can prove death trap for people, especially children.
