KARACHI: Removal of signboards from islands urged

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 21: The city government has asked advertisers to remove all neon-signboards and billboards installed on islands in between roads within three days or else the CDGK will itself remove them.

Quoting clauses 5, 7, 9 and 1, 5, 11 of the Advertisement by-laws, 2003, the CDGK's local taxes department reminded the advertisers that installation of neon-signboards and billboards on islands and in between two roads was prohibited.

A visit to the city's major thoroughfares shows that the islands and intersections have been flooded with a large number of billboards and neon-signboards in such a haphazard manner that they not only block the vision of motorists, but also often result in accidents.

At a number of places in the city the billboards are so large in size that they hinder traffic passing through first rows of the roads and the billboards and neon-signboards installed on pavements and islands at a lower height have become a source of inconvenience for pedestrians. Besides, presence of a number of billboards all around busy traffic intersections unduly distracted the attention of drivers.
