Russian diplomat for closer trade ties

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 9: Consul General of Russian Federation Vladimir Mikhaylov on Thursday informed the businessmen that a presentation on "Russian industry and business" was being organized at a local hotel on October 14.

"This would be a very professional event for boosting our trade relations in which around 20 Russian companies would be participating." Talking to the members of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), he said the economic ties between the two countries were very good and both countries had great potential to further boost their trade relations, but somehow the trade had not developed successfully.

The consul general said that there were positive trends in our business relations and we had to find out ways and means to improve it. Referring to Russian entry in the WTO, Mr Mikhaylov said that tough negotiations were being carried out and we were optimistic about it. He said that except gas, atomic energy, military hardware and railways, all other sectors had been privatized in Russia.

On visa issue, he said, an invitation from Russian counterpart is necessary however we do accept recommendations from Export Promotion Bureau and chambers. arlier, KCCI President Siraj Kassam Teli suggested for increasing economic ties between Pakistan and Russia.

He said that the image projected by the international media about Karachi was very different from the ground realities, and isolated incidents of terrorism were unduly highlighted.

He said that overall law and order situation was quite satisfactory and the economic activity in the city had increased manifolds. He pointed out that there were good possibilities of increasing trade between the two countries, and in fact Pakistan's exports to Russia had increased last year.
