KARACHI: Policeman held for robbery

KARACHI, Sept 7: The involvement of police officials in robberies is on the rise as another policeman was arrested on Tuesday, in Gulshan-i-Iqbal's Mobina Town police limits, who confessed to being involved in more than 20 robberies.

Earlier, the police picked up a constable, Faiz Mir, posted in the investigation zone-II (Gulshan), for his alleged involvement in a robbery of Rs13.1 million in Preedy police limits.

Another policeman of the investigation zone-II (Keamari), Badshah Khan, who had been suspended, was found involved in many robbery cases. He fled after two of his gang's members were set on fire in Gizri police station's lock-up.

On Tuesday, police picked up their colleague, Sub-Inspector Azmat Ali Jafri, posted at Mobina Town police station. He was arrested when police intercepted a suspicious car near the Abdullah Girls' College.

North Nazimabad Town Investigation Officer DSP Kunwar Asif told Dawn that Azmat Ali was driving the car. "When the police searched the occupants of the car, a TT pistol without licence was found. Besides Azmat, three others, Imran, Nadeem and Khurram, were in the car," he added.

They were taken to a police station and interrogated. Azmat confessed to being involved in a robbery in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. He was arrested and an FIR, No.424/04, registered under Section 392/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Imran, Nadeem and Khurram were facing six, four and one case, respectively, and they were recently released on bail, the police said.
