KARACHI, Aug 30: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has urgedthe provincial cabinet to review its decision of denationalizing St Patrick's and St Joseph's colleges and take appropriate steps in the best interest of citizens.
While addressing to a delegation of affected students, their parents and teachers of both the colleges on Monday, he said: "It is a wrong perception that the privatization of institutions would raise the standard of education."
Claiming that performance of government-run schools has improved, the nazim referred to 100 per cent result in matriculation (science group) achieved by Lyari Government Girls School and added that it showed that the government schools were coming at par with private schools and soon people would like to admit their children in government schools.
COMMUNITY BOARDS: A meeting chaired by City Nazim Naimatullah Khan decided on Monday that the community development department would receive applications for the registration of Citizen Community Boards by November 2004.
Following the initial registration of 16 Citizen Community Boards, the officials concerned were asked to guide the applicants which failed to fulfil the requirements for registration so that they could also be considered for the purpose.
The meeting decided that steps would be taken to provide equal opportunities at community level for participation of people of all areas so that the objective behind the CCB's concept could be fulfilled.
It was decided that a training workshop would also be arranged in collaboration with the National Reconstruction Bureau to educate town and union council nazims as well as applicants for the community boards about the new system.
It may be mentioned here that at least 25 basic members from a community can set up community board and get themselves registered with the city government's community development department.
MUSIC PROGRAMME: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan asked the Arts Council Youth Committee's chairman to cancel the music programme, which they had planned for Sept 10 for schools and colleges students.
In a communication to the youth committee, the nazim referred to a letter issued to the principals of colleges and schools inviting their students in "Music Challenge" to be held on Sept 10 whereby the students would participate in singing and dance.
He regretted that the Arts Council was organizing a music programme for boys and girls, who were considered the future builders of Muslim Ummah. -PPI/APP
