SANGHAR: Canal breach inundates village, crop

By Our Correspondent

SANGHAR, Aug 27: A 20-foot-wide breach in the Shahpur Chakar minor on Thursday inundated several houses in Karam Dahri village and standing crop over 50 acres. The cause of the breach was said to be weak embankments of the water channel.

The breach was plugged by farmers themselves after stopping the supply of water from the main Sadah Wah canal. According to the farmers, it was the fourth breach in the water channel at the same place during the current water season.

They complained that they had informed Sindh irrigation officials about the weak embankments of the water channel but the officials took no action. Meanwhile, farmers of the Sarhal minor of the Khipro sub- division ended their protest on Friday after assurance by Taluka Nazim Khuda Bux Dars that all tampered modules at the head of the minor would be repaired to their designed capacity.

The farmers were told that water to tail-end areas would be supplied on Saturday. The farmers' organization of the Sarhal minor will also hold new election to elect its office-bears.
