KARACHI: No decision on parking fee

KARACHI, Aug 23: Parking fee will continue to be collected by contractors as long as a final decision is taken by the city district government. It was decided at a meeting held here on Monday with the City Nazim Niamatullah Khan in the chair.

It was attended, among others, by DCO Karachi, Mir Hussain Ali; EDO (Finance) Shakeel Naqvi, EDO (Revenue) Mohammad Waseem, EDO (Law) Manzoor Ahmed, district officer (Parking) Mohammad Rehan.

The meeting which was held to discuss and review the City Council's Resolution No 503 whereby it had sought an end to the charged-parking system in the city, formed a nine-member committee to propose action for the implementation of the resolution.

The terms and reference of the committee include The committee will evaluate the reasons which led to the tabling of the resolution. It would also evaluate the necessity of imposition of charged parking fees and examine the legality of such an imposition of charged-parking.

It will suggest an action plan for construction of parking lots; suggest modalities for providing convenience to general public, vis-a-vis charged parking; assess impact on unemployment and assess impact on traffic flow and traffic management in the city.

The committee has been asked to furnish its recommendations to the city Nazim within 15 days. The meeting decided that the charged-parking fees as usual will be collected in the city by contractors till further orders and a final decision will be taken on the recommendations of the committee.

The committee comprises the city Naib Nazim Tariq Hassan, Sr. Presiding officer Muslim Pervez, DIG (Traffic), CDGK's Executive district officer (Finance and Planning), EDO (Law), District Officer (Recovery), Mr Saifuddin, Zahid Saeed and Hanif Chottani.
