Pakistan spin India to defeat

AMSTELVEEN, Aug 21: Pakistan spinners Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik took seven wickets between them to bowl their side to a 66-run win over India in the opening match of the triangular event here on Saturday.

Afridi took four for 20 and man-of-the match Malik, who earlier made 68, three for 18 as India, chasing a target of 194 to win, were bowled out for 127 with six overs to spare.

Man-of-the-match Malik said he didn't reserve his best performances for India: "Not especially against India. The problem is my wife is from India," he said with a smile on his face.-AFP

Razzaq, Moin lift Pakistan in rain-hit opener

AMSTELVEEN, Aug 21: An unbroken stand of 56 between Abdul Razzaq and Moin Khan took Pakistan to 192 for six in their triangular series opener against India at the VRA Ground on Saturday.

Razzaq (35 not out off 27 balls with two sixes) and Moin 27 not out (off 20 balls with three fours) took 42 runs off the last three overs of a match twice reduced by rain to 33 overs per side.

Seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji kept things tight with three for 27 from seven overs before the Pakistani batsmen cashed in with paceman Irfan Pathan seeing his seven overs go for 57 runs.

Earlier Shoaib Malik weighed in with 68 off 67 balls after India captain Saurav Ganguly won the toss and elected to field.

His decision came after star batsman Sachin Tendulkar had been ruled out of the tournament with an elbow injury.

After a four hour delay a capacity 10,000 crowd saw Shahid Afridi loft the fifth ball of the match, from Irfan Pathan, high over long-on for six.

But India hit back when Afridi, who had raced to a typically aggressive 19, got a soaring top edge off Ajit Agarkar and Mohammad Kaif running back in the covers took a fine catch.

India's change bowlers kept things tight and Yasir Hameed went for a 35-ball nine when he edged Balaji through to wicket-keeper Rahul Dravid.

New batsman Inzamamul Haq was soon back in the pavilion, given out to the Balaji/Dravid combination for one, Pakistan 58 for three in the 15th over

Malik then had a narrow escape on 29 when Kaif, fielding close in at short mid-off, just failed to hold a one-handed diving chance off Ganguly.

A brief burst of rain then halted play with Pakistan 74 for three off 17 overs, Malik 37 not out and Yousuf Youhana unbeaten on six.

After a 25-minute break, Malik completed a 51-ball fifty with five fours.

Youhana was run out for a run-a-ball 28 after his bat got stuck in the position and he failed to beat Virender Sehwag's throw from long-on.

Pakistan were now 122 for four after Youhana had put on 64 with Malik.

And soon afterwards Malik himself fell when Kaif got under a skyer off Kumble and took his second well-judged catch of the match.

Razzaq added late impetus by smashing Agarkar for a straight six before clearing the ropes again off the last ball from Pathan.
