Cabinet decision welcomed

KARACHI, Aug 20: The Pakistan Herald Workers Union has welcomed the decision of the federal cabinet to implement the Seventh Wage Board Award for newspaper employees within the framework of the existing law, says a press release.

In a resolution adopted at a meeting of its managing committee held on Thursday with Mr Abdul Latif Baloch in the chair, the union also welcomed the decision of the federal cabinet regarding linking of government advertisements with implementation of wage award.

The meeting urged the government to expedite implementation of the award. Another resolution welcomed the prime minister's decision to regularize 7,000 daily wage employees of the PTCL in two phases, and asked for enactment of laws to ban government and private organizations from hiring employees on daily wages against permanent posts.

It also demanded effective measures to eliminate the contract system in the newspaper industry. The meeting criticized the APNS decision to observe Aug 15 instead of Aug 14 as a closed holiday in connection with the Independence Day.
