KARACHI: SHC moved for disposal of cases pending for 17 years

KARACHI, Aug 19: The father of an accused finally moved the Sindh High Court for disposal of cases against his son who is incarcerated and facing trial since more than 17 years.

Mohammad Sharif submitted in his constitutional petition that his son Afzal Haider was booked in different cases, mostly under Section 17(3) and 14 of Enforcement of Huddood Ordinance (EHO) in different police stations in Karachi and is facing trials since 1987.

He stated that earlier a petition No. 1967/1993 was filed in SHC and the then Chief Justice granted bail to his son, but he was shifted to Lahore jail in another case lodged against him.

He said Afzal remained in Lahore jail for almost 10 years and after disposal of the case he was again shifted to Karachi in May 2004. It was submitted that after a lapse of many years, the police are showing no interest to produce his son before the court for disposal of cases.

Naming the Sindh home department, the DIG Investigation, TPO Saddar, SHO Artillery Maidan and others as respondents the court was prayed to direct the respondents to submit a consolidated report in respect of all cases whether pending or disposed of against the petitioner's son and directed the trial court to dispose of the cases against accused within a shortest possible time. - PPI
