KARACHI: Vigorous efforts against criminals stressed - Traffic arrangements reviewed


KARACHI, Aug 19: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has called for vigorous and coordinated efforts for the elimination of the culprits involved in dacoities and kidnappings for ransom in the interior of Sindh.

He was speaking at a meeting held at the Governor's House here on Thursday. The governor said that police and other law-enforcement agencies had achieved significant successes in rooting out terrorism. An all time attention, he added, was also required to rid the society from other crimes.

Provincial Minister for Home Rauf Siddiqui briefed the governor about the ongoing operation against criminals in Shah Belo. Through the operation, 90 per cent areas had been freed from dacoits and other criminals whereas the remaining areas would also be cleared soon.

Dr Ibad stressed the need for measures that could help people of far flung areas have easy access to justice in case they were subjected to excesses. This, he said, should be continuously monitored and action must be taken without any discrimination against the elements involved in excesses and oppression.

In this regard, he added, notice be taken of media reports about such incidents. He directed the officials attending the meeting that a strict watch be maintained on car-lifters, robbers and extortionists in urban areas.

The governor also emphasized the need for ensuring the process of obtaining a certificate from every SHO that no den of betting, obscenity, narcotics, etc., existed in his jurisdiction. He said action be taken against the SHO of the area from where such activities were reported.

He also called for an effective role to be played by police in ensuring citizens' right of way and an effective check on encroachments. The governor made mention of his earlier directive about the uncivilized act of wall-chalking and maintain cleanliness. He said a close watch be kept on the painters involved in wall-chalking and they be apprehended for this illegal act.

Stressing the need for upholding sanctity of shrines, Dr Ibad issued directives for a neat and clean environment around the holy places and said that addicts and criminals be kept away from such places.

He told the meeting that the efforts towards making the society crime-free and peaceful could succeed only with the cooperation of community. In this regard, he called for effective liaison between police and people at every level.

VISIT: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad on Thursday visited various localities in the city to inspect work on the ongoing development projects and take stock of civic problems, especially those relating to encroachments, traffic and sanitation.

The governor was informed that out of the total 22 pedestrian bridges in the metropolis, only seven were in proper condition. Repair work on eight bridges had been carried out recently whereas for the repair of another four, tenders had been invited.

He was further informed that a pedestrian bridge had been dismantled to widen Dawood Chowrangi and dismantling of two more bridges had been demanded by concerned union councils.

Dr Ibad directed the relevant authorities for proper maintenance and beautification of pedestrian bridges. He also stressed on measures to ensure proper parking so that flow of vehicular traffic was not affected. In this regard, he specifically mentioned the traffic situation on the Jinnah Hospital road.

The governor took note of heavy traffic and congestion in Saddar/Empress Market areas and discussed with concerned officials the idea of rerouting of public transport. He issued directives for a smooth flow of traffic on all the streets falling in the electronic markets area and said that steps be taken in consultation with the trade organizations of the markets in the area for the removal of all obstructions.

In his visit, Dr Ibad inspected the under-construction projects of FTC flyover, Karsaz Road, Shahrah-i-Quaideen flyover, Dalmia Road and Gulbai-Mauripur Road. He was briefed on the progress made so far on these projects.

While exchanging views with concerned officials on the problems affecting the ongoing work on the Lyari Expressway and Northern By-pass projects, the governor called for a meeting of the concerned departments at the Governor's House. -APP/PPI
