KARACHI: Rs553m water project for Karachi

KARACHI, Aug 18: The City District Government Karachi has finalized a Rs552.98 million plan "Dry Land Management & Water Conservation in Karachi District" to conserve rainwater for meeting the water needs of its suburban areas.

The plan, part of National Environment Action Plan and Support programme (NEAP-SP), would mainly focus on Keamari, Bin Qasim and Gadap towns; the suburban areas of Karachi spread over an 1,800 sq-km and having a population of 517,295. These towns primarily depend on rainfall.

Besides, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board water supply does not cater to the drinking water needs of these areas. According to the plan, a copy of which was obtained by PPI retention weirs and check dams were the ideal solution for these areas, which would be constructed on main rivers. - PPI
