KARACHI: CS reviews work on LEW project


KARACHI, Aug 17: Sindh Chief Secretary Mohammed Aslam Sanjrani on Tuesday paid a three-hour long visit to the Lyari Expressway Project from Mauripur Bridge to Sohrab Goth. During the visit, he was accompanied by Karachi District Coordination Officer Mir Hussain Ali and LEW Resettlement Project Director Shafiqur Rehman Paracha.

The chief secretary reviewed the pace of the work at Mauripur Bridge, Bihar Colony, Shershahm Bakra Piri, Dhobhi Ghat, Old Golimar, Gujjar Nullah, Tin Hatti, Liaquatabad, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Lasbella, Rashid Minhas Road, F B Area, Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Sohrab Goth.

Later, Project Director LEW and National Highway Authority Mr Barakzai gave a briefing and assured the visiting officials that 75 per cent work on the project would be completed by December 2004.

The chief secretary directed the project officials that a presentation on the Rehabilitation Package be given at the next meeting and expressed the desire that all development schemes in Sindh, including the mega projects of Karachi, be completed as per the directive of President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

Mr Sanjrani observed that completion of LEW would prove a milestone in solving the problems of the people and providing better traffic system and transport facilities to them.

He was informed that so far the city government had achieved over 16-Km right-of-way and handed over the same to the NHA. The chief secretary ordered that 60 per cent right-of-way be made available by Sept 15, and 75 per cent by December.

He was also informed that after completion of LEW, the 16.5-Km journey would be covered in 20 minutes, and that the track would have no speed-breakers or signals, which would facilitating the traffic flow, besides reducing the noise and pollution, as the vehicles would move at a speed of 80 Km an hour. The expressway would have barbed fence on both sides to stop entry of animals, it was added.

It was pointed out that after completion of the project, it would not be possible to dump garbage into Lyari River, while the existing heaps would be cleared. Mr Paracha gave a detailed briefing about the rehabilitation of the people who got dislocated because of the project.

The chief secretary appreciated the performance of the city government, Lyari Expressway Development Project and the National Highway Authority and called for timely completion of the schemes. -APP
