KARACHI, Aug 16: Six workers of the banned Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Aalmi were indicted on Monday in a case pertaining to possession of explosive material by an additional district and sessions court.
Judge Abrar Hussain F. Memon ordered the prosecution to examine prosecution witnesses on Sept 7 as the Harkat men - Abdul Ghani, Khalil Ahmed, Adeel Ahmed, Mohammed Shahab, Abdur Rauf and Irfan Baloch - denied charges and pleaded "not guilty".
The Aalmi men were arrested on April 12 in Manzoor Colony within the limits of the Baloch Colony Police Station. Four hand-grenades, four fuses and four timers were seized from them.
ACQUITTED: The additional district and sessions judge, South, Farzana Anver Shah, acquitted a worker of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement in the murder case. Naseem Hussain alias Naseem Sindhi was booked for the murder of Zaki Ahmed, joint sector in charge of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, in Burnes Road on July 2, 1998.
The judge exonerated the Haqiqi worker from the murder charge on an application filed for his acquittal under Section 265-K of the CrPC. Meanwhile, the additional district and sessions judge, Central, Ms Zarina Abbas, acquitted four accused in a case pertaining to attempt to kill policemen during a shootout.
Accused Shahid, Fahad, Irfan and Aslam were booked in the case on May 2, 2003, by the Khawaja Ajmair Nagri police.
KIDNAPPING CASE: The police on Monday submitted charge-sheet against two accused Athar Mehmood and Khurrum Mushtaq in a kidnapping and killing case before Justice Khliji Arif Hussain of the Sindh High Court, who is also an administrative judge of the Anti-Terrorism Courts in Karachi.
The AJ, accepting the charge-sheet against the accused, referred the case to the ATC-III Karachi for trial. The accused, along with co-accused Asif, Sheryar and Shabana are charged with killing Raghib Abbas after kidnapping.
According to police, co-accused Sheraz made the victim his friend through chatting on the internet by portraying him as a girl and invited him to meet near Rado Flats Block-12 Gulistan-i-Jauhar on March 31. As he reached the spot, the accused kidnapped him with other co-accused Asif and Shabana.
The accused held Raghib hostage on gunpoint and demanded Rs 1 million as ransom from his family. On failure, they injected poison in his body and left him in a car in an unconscious condition. He was rushed to hospital where he died on April 16. -PPI
