'No hurry to hand over foreigners'

ISLAMABAD, Aug 5: Interior Minister Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat on Thursday said no foreign terror suspects would be handed over to any other country unless domestic law-enforcement agencies completed their investigations.

"Why should we hand them over to another country immediately. They were involved in terrorist activities here," he said while talking to journalists after handing over relief goods, including wheat and edible oil, to Afghan Ambassador Dr Nanguyali Tarzi at NLC's camp office in Soan Camp.

However, there are reports that top Al Qaeda leader Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, who was arrested from Gujrat last week, has been handed over to the US. Talking about the investigation of suicide attack on Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz, he said it was progressing well and investigators had found some important clues. "Some five security and intelligence and provincial agencies were probing the case," he added.

The minister said some suspects involved in terrorism had been arrested. "We have detained 20 people in the past three weeks, including foreigners and Al Qaeda suspects. I cannot give you more details about terror suspects captured in recent operations," Mr Hayat said.

In addition to Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, who carried a reward of $25 million on his head, two other 'most wanted' suspects had been arrested with rewards offered for their arrests also running into millions of dollars, he said.

The minister said if any country was concerned about the arrest of its citizens in terrorist acts, it should approach the Foreign Office in accordance with international rules and policies.

Referring to the new visa policy, he said that the cabinet permitted the streamlining of the visa policy to stop the entry of unscrupulous elements into the country.
