MULTAN: Tenants to protest newsman's arrest

By Correspondent

MULTAN, Aug 1: The Anjuman Mazareen Punjab has warned of a protest drive if the government does not release detained newsman Sarwar Mujahid within 24 hours.

According to a press release issued here on Sunday, as a first step the AMP would organize protest rallies on Monday (today) in all the villages of Okara Military Farms (OMF) and Renala Khurd Estate Farms to raise voice against the 'government atrocities' towards newsmen who did their duties according to their conscience.

Correspondent of an Urdu daily in Okara, Sarwar Mujahid was allegedly whisked away by some law enforcement agencies on Saturday night from his home. It was the second time that Mr. Mujahid was meted out the same treatment.

Earlier, last year he remained in detention for over two months. He is said to be a staunch supporter of the tenants of the OMF who are demanding ownership rights against the tenancy lands claiming that they have been cultivating the same for nearly a century.

Recently, a New York-based human right watchdog body Human Rights Watch has release a report about the pathetic state of affairs at the OMF viz-a-viz atrocities against the 'revolting' tenants. The military authorities rejected the HRW report.
