Khairpur clashes claim 8 lives

By Mansoor Mirani

KHAIRPUR, July 25: Eight people were killed and four others were injured in attacks and counter-attacks by Solangi and Jagirani tribesmen on each other here on late Saturday night.

According to witnesses, some people barged into the house of Sher Mohammad Jagirani in the Sonaro Jagirani village, near Kot Pul at about 1am and opened fire, killing Saeed Ahmad Jagirani and injuring Mohammad Suleman, Anwar, Nihalan and Afroze.

At about 3am, a group of armed Jagirani tribesmen attacked the house of Mohammad Murad Solangi in the Buth Mor village. Mohammad Murad, 60, his three sons, Mohammad Yousuf 18, Gul Bahar 30, and Mohammad Sharif 25, Noor Mohammad 40, Zarina 26, wife of Gul Bahar, and Mohamamd Soomar, 60, were killed in the attack.

The bodies of the people killed were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem on Sunday morning and were buried near Wada Machhiyoon under tight security. Saeed Jagirani was buried in a graveyard near his village.

The killings sparked fear and panic in the entire area. Business activities and traffic in Kot Pul, Hajan Shah and Wada Machiyon remained suspended. Rangers' personnel have been deployed to avert any further clash between the two groups. Police pickets have also been set up and police mobiles are patrolling the area.

OUR SUKKUR CORRESPONDENT ADDS: Police have made 30 arrests and seized arms. According to police, the groups have been at odds since the murder of one Faiz Mohammad Jagirani about 12 years ago.

Tension between the tribes intensified last week. An elder of the Solangi tribe, Pir Badal, initiated efforts to work out a reconciliation. He asked Mir Sunder Khan Sundrani to fix a date for a meeting to resolve the dispute. Mr Sundrani had agreed, but Saturday night's clashes seem to have sabotaged the peace efforts.
