KARACHI: Three die in road accidents

KARACHI, July 20: Three people, including a five-year old girl, died and three others were injured in road accidents in different parts of the city on Tuesday.

Police said that Head Constable Mohammad Asim, 30, died while his associate constable Nadeem was injured when a speeding water tanker knocked them down near Tibet Centre on M.A. Jinnah Road.

Both the wounded policemen were rushed to the Civil Hospital, where Mohammad Asim was pronounced dead. Nadeem was provided treatment at the hospital. In front of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, a woman and her husband were hit by a speeding bus.

Police said that the couple was on motorcycle when a speeding bus of route (1-D) knocked them down. They were shifted to the hospital where the woman, Siddiqa, was pronounced dead. Her husband, Mohammad Shafeeq, was provided treatment.

In Saeedabad, a girl died in a hit-and-run accident. Police said that Ambreen, 5, was crossing over the main road when the accident occurred. She was taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

In FB Area, a female passenger of a bus was injured when the bus was hit by a speeding truck (LSC 1334) at Ayesha Manzil. Police said that the woman was taken to a private hospital. Later, enraged people of the area set the truck on fire.

ENCOUNTER: Police on late Monday night arrested a bandit after an exchange of fire near Aladdin Park. ASP Gulshan-i-Iqbal Noman Siddiqui said that two suspects had hired a taxi (JM-1222) from Hasan Square for Aladdin Park.

When the taxi stopped at the park, the suspects tried to deprive the driver, Iqbal Akhtar, of cash. Spotting the incident, two policemen Shakil Ahmed and Azhar Abbas warned the suspects ensuing an exchange of fire, the ASP said.

He said that one of the suspects was wounded in encounter while his accomplice managed to escape. The injured suspect was arrested and shifted to the JPMC. Police also recovered a TT pistol from his possession.
