UNITED NATIONS, July 20: The Sudanese government documents incontrovertibly show that government officials directed recruitment, arming and other support to the ethnic militias known as the Janjaweed , Human Rights Watch alleged in a report released on Monday.
It accused the militia of murder, rape and uprooting one million African villagers. The New York-based watchdog said that the government of Sudan has consistently denied recruiting and arming the Janjaweed militias, including during the recent visits of US Secretary of State Colin Powell and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
The body called for an immediate UN resolution that sanctions Khartoum and government officials responsible for crimes against humanity. Mr Roth called upon the UN to pressure the government into accepting a police force similar to the one Australia sent to East Timor in 1999.
