Government seeks Swedish radar system to match India: ISLAMABAD, July 14: Government, concerned over India's plans to acquire a strategic radar system from Israel, is seeking a similar system from Sweden. Air Commodore Sarfraz Ahmed Khan, spokesman for the Pakistan Air Force, said talks were underway with Sweden over the purchase of an Airborne Early Warning System, but no final decision had been taken. A Swedish embassy spokesman confirmed that the matter came up for discussion when President Pervez Musharraf visited Stockholm last week. He said a Swedish parliamentary commission, which handles defence-related deals, had approved the sale of the radar system and it was now up to Pakistani authorities to decide. "I can't say at what stage it's at, but the negotiations have been going on for quite some time," he told Reuters.    (Reuters) (Posted @ 14:05 PST)

Bin Laden confidante turns himself in to Saudis: RIYADH, July 14: A top Saudi militant whose image was last seen on a video congratulating Osama bin Laden on the U.S. terrorist attacks has turned himself in to Saudi officials under an amnesty programme, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Khaled al-Harby, known as Abu Suleiman al-Makki, contacted the Saudi embassy in Iran from the Iranian-Afghan border, where he had been living, and expressed "his desire to take advantage of the royal offer". Handicapped since a bullet wound in the 1990s paralyzed him from the waist down, al-Makki was transported in a wheelchair onto an airplane for his return to the Saudi kingdom, according to television footage broadcast in the United States.    (DPA) (Posted @ 11:50 PST)

11 dead in Baghdad blast : BAGHDAD, July 14: Eleven people were killed today and at least 30 injured in a suspected car bomb attack in central Baghdad, while attackers killed the governor of the northern city of Mosul after ambushing his convoy. The blast in Baghdad hit a checkpoint close to the former Green Zone, where the US and British embassies and Iraqi interim government are based, sending clouds of thick black smoke into the air.
