Shujaat's statement on Kalabagh dam decried

By Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, July 12: Reacting to a statement of Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on the Kalabagh dam during his recent Sindh visit, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi on Sunday said the province would not accept construction of dams on the River Indus.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Dr Magsi, who is also president of the Pakistan Oppressed Nations' Movement, Sindh chapter, said the rulers should shelve dam projects.

Accusing the prime minister of duplicity, he said in the same breath Mr Hussain had talked of meeting nationalist leaders and construction of the Kalabagh dam.

He said people of Sindh, Balochistan and the NWFP were against construction of dams on the Indus river. He reminded Mr Hussain that assemblies of the smaller provinces, irrigation experts and intellectuals had opposed construction of the Kalabagh dam.

SNP: Sindh National Party chairman Ameer Bhambhro, in a statement issued here on Sunday, his party had provided a platform to people of Thar by fielding a Sindhi candidate, Sohail David, against Mr Aziz in the by-election in Tharparkar.
