LAHORE: Video trial for select categories of offences

By Our Correspondent

LAHORE, July 12: The Lahore High Court has decided to introduce video trial of a select categories of offenders inside prisons.

The experiment will be done in the cases of juveniles, women and hardened criminals who will be allowed a place separate from judges and lawyers while recording statements and facing other procedures during trial.

This is the fist time that such a scheme has been introduced in the country. However, the prisons of the province are yet to be equipped with necessary gadgets for video trials.

The LHC registrar has written to the home department to direct jail authorities to equip themselves of video cameras and other machinery along with proper courtrooms for the conduct of trials.

Another reason for introducing the video trial inside jails is to avoid hassles of transporting prisoners to courts and making extra security measures during their presence in courts for trial.

TRANSFER: The LHC transferred civil judge Shabbir Husain from Isa Khel and posted him at Mianwali in place of Anees Abbas who has been suspended from service and asked to report to the principal seat at Lahore. Judge Shabbir Hussain shall also visit Piplan sub-division, district Mianwali three days in a week for disposal of criminal/civil cases.
