KARACHI, June 22: Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim has pointed out that there will be no change in the sharing formula of the provincial cabinet with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement - whose strength is 41 against 47 of the PML - and said the new cabinet will have more ministers soon.

He was talking to a group of journalists in his chamber on Tuesday after the session was adjourned till Wednesday. He said he was not worried by the ultimatum given by the MQM to the government, as the former had no complaints against him, asking: "And why should they have any complaints against me when I have just recently taken over the government?"

The chief minister reiterated his commitment of good governance and service to the people, and said he would take administrative actions where ever necessary to improve performance of the government.

When his attention was drawn towards undisciplined scenes on the treasury benches on Tuesday, Arbab said he wanted to see the House Business Committee activated so that treasury and opposition representatives should meet before the session daily and decide business for the day. "Proceedings of the House should run in accordance with parliamentary norms," he added.

Regarding the threatening posture adopted by some members in the House, he said he was unaware of it since he was not present in the House then. However, he would call recordings of the house proceedings; and if any member was found to have threatened another member and causing him harm, if any, would be held responsible.

In reply to a question about walkout of four members from the treasury benches over water shortage in their respective constituencies, the chief minister said he appreciated the MPAs for raising questions about performance of the department, as it would help him in improving the working efficiency of the said department.

"After all, they are elected representatives and not slaves, and are free to question the performance of departments, which would rather help in keeping the concerned departments alert," he continued.

Furthermore, he said, he had deputed an officer to take notes of the complaints of MPAs, which were raised in the House, so that these don't go unnoticed. Speaking about the unemployment problem, Arbab said the issue cannot be resolved just by providing government jobs, since educated people were not the only ones facing the problem.

He said to find solution to the problem, he was working to improve the performance of irrigation system, so that people at the tail-end get water for cultivation. Besides, he said he had also suggested setting up a micro-credit bank. These steps would help in checking the unemployment problem, among both the literate and illiterate, he added.

To another question, Arbab said that Jam Sadiq Ali was not only benevolent but also a good administrator, and likewise Sardar Mumtaz Ali Bhutto and late Ayub Khuhro before him were also good administrators, and he would like to take leaves from their books.
