KARACHI, June 12: After an incident of hooliganism by a group of students and damages to a department, teaching at Sindh Medical College was suspended for rest of the day on Saturday, said a college source.

It was learnt that some students who had failed to clear their IIIrd professional annual examinations, resorted to protest, and damaged offices and other facilities at the Department of Community Medicine at around 11.30am.

The college principal called in the police, which picked up at least three students for misconduct, but later released them on the recommendations of the college administration, added the source.

The students believed to be members of a students organisation were of the view that they failed in the exams due to "lack of interest" on the part of their teachers.

The enraged students not only manhandled senior teachers at the department, but also broke window panes and furniture, and later moved to the office of vice-principal and principal where they chanted slogans, said the source.

However, police were called in to control the situation, said a college teacher, adding that a negotiation was held between the principal and seniors of the students detained by police. The students submitted an apology over the incident and gave an undertaking that they would not resort to such activities again.

When contacted, the college principal, Prof Naushad said teaching was stopped after the incident and students were sent to their homes.
