Published June 8, 2004

QUETTA, June 7: The leader of opposition in the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rahman, on Monday said that any in-house change in the present circumstances when the country was facing different problems would weaken the system. Talking to newsmen, he stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions.

The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leader observed that an in-house change was the internal issue of the government but the race for the prime minister's slot, would cause instability.

He said the government and the administration in Sindh had failed to control the situation. He said the government must take concrete steps to improve the situation by removing weaknesses in Sindh.

He said he favoured the formation of a coalition government in Sindh and it should be recognized that the People's Party Parliamentarians was the largest political group in the provincial assembly. He said if the government had any proposal in this regard, it should be made public.

The MMA leader said President Gen Pervez Musharraf was bound by the constitution and he would not act contrary to its requirements. He said the president should not take steps that damage democracy.

Regarding Wana operation he emphasized that the government should not use force against tribesmen as in the past both sides suffered losses. He said the government should desist from acts that created hatred between the tribesmen and the law-enforcement agencies. He said the issue of registration of foreigners in South Waziristan should be tackled peacefully.

He asserted that the foreigners had not created any problem for the government or local people during the last 15 years but the rulers were taking action against them at the behest of the United States.
