'Options on Karachi discussed at GHQ'

By Munawer Azeem

ISLAMABAD, June 1: A high-level meeting was reportedly held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) here on Tuesday on the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi. However, the director-general of the ISPR, Major Gen Shaukat Sultan, neither confirmed nor denied that such a meeting had taken place.

"Many meetings take place in the GHQ and we do not announce each and every meeting," Maj Gen Sultan, said when contacted by the correspondent. He said he had no information when asked if the military high command had discussed the option of handing over the Sindh government to the corps commander and the Karachi administration to the army.

Sources said the military top brass expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi. The sources also said that the government was considering to transfer Dr Shoib Suddle, the Inspector General (IG) of police Balochistan, to Karachi as IG Sindh.

DR Suddle has relinquished the charge and left Quetta on Monday. Dr Suddle it may be mentioned had played a key role in the last Karachi operation.
