Two killed by rangers firing in soilder bazar: KARACHI, May 31: At least two people were killed when paramilitary rangers fired back at a vehicle used by armed men who opened fire on police and paramilitary rangers near the site of the blast. A state of emergency has been declared in all the city's hospitals and an appeal for blood donations made, hospital sources said. According to initial reports, four passengers including two women and two men received minor injuries who were being provided medical aid at Chichawatni hospital, a railways police officer said.   (APP) (Posted @ 09:40 PST) Governing Council meeting on Iraq president delayed: BAGHDAD, May 31: The Governing Council has delayed until Tuesday a meeting to nominate a new president of Iraq to take over sovereignty from the US-led coalition, one leading Kurdish member said today. Moderate Sunni Muslims and Iraqi exiles with strong ties to Washington, both Ghazi al-Yawar and Adnan Pachachi, were running neck and neck today to succeed Saddam Hussein as president of Iraq. "I think we are going to win either way. Arafat ready to extend hand in peace to Sharon: JERUSALEM, May 31: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said he was ready to extend a hand in peace to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to restart the stalled Middle East peace process. Having been forced to postpone a vote on the plan because it was apparent that he would lose, Mr Sharon opened the weekly cabinet meeting by threatening to dismiss ministers opposed to "unilateral disengagement" and to take other "unprecedented political steps" to force it through.   (Guardian) (Posted @ 11:20 PST) Tape Claims Responsibility for Arab Attack: MANAMA, May 31: A man identified as al-Qaida's chief in the Saudi region claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in the kingdom's oil hub on a tape posted on the Internet. The speaker who identifies himself as Abdulaziz Issa Abdul-Mohsin al-Moqrin, believed to lead al-Qaida operations in Saudi Arabia, describes attackers ``slaughtering'' hostages, specifying they included an Italian, an American a Japanese and a Briton. On the 8-minute tape, the speaker also said an American's body was dragged through the city streets. The speaker rails against the Saudi government, accusing it of opening the country to Americans and providing ``America with oil at the cheapest prices according to their masters' wish, so that their economy does not collapse.'' The authenticity of tape could not be verified, but the voice resembled the voice on previous tapes attributed to al-Moqrin. U.S. and Saudi officials believe al-Moqrin is al-Qaida's top figure in Saudi Arabia and masterminded the Nov. 8 bombing of a Riyadh housing compound that killed 17 people, most of them Arabs and Muslims working in Saudi Arabia.   (Guardian) (Posted @ 12:40 PST) Singapore's Lee drops hint on political transition: SINGAPORE, May 31: It's one of Singapore's best-kept political secrets: the date when Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong will hand power this year to chosen successor Lee Hsien Loong the second leadership transition in Singapore's history. Lee, son of modern Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew, dropped a clue on Sunday, saying any transition would not come before Singapore's annual National Day on August 9, defusing speculation that the handover could come earlier.
