Mosque Explosion in Karachi Leaves 16 Dead : KARACHI, May 31: A bomb explosion ripped through a Shiite Muslim mosque in Karachi today, killing at least 16 people and wounding more than 55, police said. Witnesses said a blast rocked the Imam Bargah Ali Raza mosque during evening prayers - the latest in a series of terrorist attacks to hit Karachi. A senior official said the attack was possible retaliation for the assassination of a senior Sunni Muslim cleric in the city on Sunday. Tariq Jamil, chief of operations of Karachi police, said it was a ``high-intensity bomb'' and at least 16 people were killed and more than 55 injured. Most of the casualties were taken to three hospitals in private vehicles. Other bodies were retrieved from the debris and ferried off in ambulances. Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said President Gen. Pervez Musharraf had expressed grief over the killings and would take an ``important step'' in response to the incident, but did not elaborate. The bombing triggered riots. Hundreds of Shiite youths set fire to two police vehicles and a gas station outside the mosque, and then ransacked two government offices, stealing furniture and torching it at a traffic intersection. Police fired tear gas, trying to disperse the mob. Six or seven gunshots were heard, but it wasn't clear who fired them. Interior Ministry spokesman Abdur Rauf Chaudhry said it was ``too early'' to say who was behind the attack, but said ``it appears to be sectarian'' violence. Police cordoned off the surrounding area.    (Guardian/Reuters) (Updated @ 23:35 PST)

Tape Claims Responsibility for Arab Attack: MANAMA, May 31: A man identified as al-Qaida's chief in the Saudi region claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in the kingdom's oil hub on a tape posted on the Internet. The speaker who identifies himself as Abdulaziz Issa Abdul-Mohsin al-Moqrin, believed to lead al-Qaida operations in Saudi Arabia, describes attackers ``slaughtering'' hostages, specifying they included an Italian, an American a Japanese and a Briton. On the 8-minute tape, the speaker also said an American's body was dragged through the city streets. The speaker rails against the Saudi government, accusing it of opening the country to Americans and providing ``America with oil at the cheapest prices according to their masters' wish, so that their economy does not collapse.'' The authenticity of tape could not be verified, but the voice resembled the voice on previous tapes attributed to al-Moqrin. U.S. and Saudi officials believe al-Moqrin is al-Qaida's top figure in Saudi Arabia and masterminded the Nov. 8 bombing of a Riyadh housing compound that killed 17 people, most of them Arabs and Muslims working in Saudi Arabia.    (Guardian) (Posted @ 12:40 PST)

Singapore's Lee drops hint on political transition: SINGAPORE, May 31: It's one of Singapore's best-kept political secrets: the date when Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong will hand power this year to chosen successor Lee Hsien Loong the second leadership transition in Singapore's history. Lee, son of modern Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew, dropped a clue on Sunday, saying any transition would not come before Singapore's annual National Day on August 9, defusing speculation that the handover could come earlier. Lee told reporters that Goh will read the annual National Day speech, indicating that the city-state's first political handover in 14 years would not take place before then, the Straits Times reported today.    (Reuters) (Posted @ 09:40 PST)
