Govt regrets opposition's stand on C'wealth


ISLAMABAD, May 20: Pakistan on Thursday regretted action by some political elements to oppose reinstatement of Pakistan's membership to the Commonwealth.

A statement released by the foreign office spokesman referred to some political elements who approached the Commonwealth secretariat to oppose reinstatement of Pakistan's to the organization, on the eve of the meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) in London.

The spokesman said: "Such approaches are unwarranted and untenable. Pakistan has met all the criteria for restoration of its membership of the Councils of the Commonwealth."

He said in the recent past, Pakistan has made major progress towards deepening and strengthening of democracy and democratic institutions. -Agencies
