ISLAMABAD, May 20: Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro has staved off another resolution and identical motion on the Kargil war from being discussed in the Senate saying, "it is likely to generate a discussion on a matter which is detrimental to public interest".
The Senate chairman's letter of May 18 rejecting the resolution and motion was received by opposition senators on Thursday, said PPP Senator Farhatullah Khan Babar in a statement here.
The resolution, which had been moved by Mr Babar, stated: "This House recommends that a bipartisan committee of the Parliament be formed to look into the causes of the Indo-Pakistan conflict of 1999 and to recommend measures for strengthening the country's defence preparedness against such incidents in the future".
The identical motion, which too was rejected, had said, "This house may discuss the Indo-Pakistan conflict of 1999 with a view to drawing appropriate lessons from the conflict."
The resolution was submitted by four senators from three different political parties and included Farhatullah Babar and Rukhsana Zuberi of the PPP, Sardar Mahtab Khan Abbasi of the PML-N and Ilyas Bilour of the ANP. The identical motion was submitted separately by Senator Farhatullah Babar.
