KARACHI: Closure of buses irks students

KARACHI, April 7: The operators of World-Wide Service have stopped plying buses between Malir Cantt and Tower via Gulistan-i-Jauhar and Karachi University.

The buses are now being run between Gulshan-i-Hadeed and Tower, ignoring the fact that a large number of people, especially students of Karachi University, used to travel by these buses as it was a cheap and useful means of travel.

Currently no public transport enters Gulistan-i-Jauhar from University of Karachi except for metro bus which is unaffordable for students. Presently students have to wait for hours for a bus after the closure of the route.

A female student of KU, while reacting to the closure of bus service, said under the Urban Transport Service routes are being re-allocated and there was no check on violation of rules and regulations.

Another commuter criticized the re-allocation of route to the WWS buses and said he was facing problems in reaching office, and going back to home. "The only solution left with me is to travel with metro bus, but it charges Rs21, and there is no guarantee that seat would be available in it".

He disclosed that the WWS bus owners have been allocated a lucrative route of Gulshan-i-Hadeed-Tower and they have been asked to ply buses only on that route instead of Malir Cant-Tower on the recommendations of a high government official.

An official of the WWS said they were under pressure from the Green Bus and the government and have been asked to stop plying on that route and instead start service between Gulshan-i-Hadeed and Tower. -PPI
