KARACHI, April 7: The administration at the tension-hit Sindh Medical College on Wednesday decided to keep all sorts of academic activities suspended till April 10 in the campus, said official sources.

An official source said that the administration had planned to restore the teaching and examination activities from Wednesday, but things could not be materialized accordingly.

Initially, the college administration and police were anticipating that the differences between the two student groups, involved in violent incident of April 2, would subside with the reports about recovery of a gun-shot victim activist of one group and bail order of an activist of another group, added the source, saying that relevant police functionary and college administration were highly confused over the situation.

He said that unless the two groups reach an agreement of compromise, nobody can guarantee congenial atmosphere at the college. The gathering of students in the prevailing situation within the college premises cannot be seen viable for the moment, added the source, saying that the relevant police authorities were also not ready to take any risk.

When contacted, SMC principal Prof Akbar H. Soomro said that it had been decided as preemptive measures to postpone the academic activities, including the MBBS practical exams till April 10.

The college would resume for teaching and examination purposes on April 12 while the details of rescheduled viva exams would be pasted at the college in the meantime for the guidance of candidates concerned, he added.

Students said that a full fledged suspension of teaching and examination activities had been observed since April 3. "We had gone to college for viva on Friday, but, police did not allow us to enter the college premises, said a couple of affected candidates. It was also learnt that the college buses had not been plied since April 3.
