Court serves notice on PCB chief
By M. H. Khan
HYDERABAD, March 27: Civil Judge-I Hyderabad issued on Saturday notices to chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and secretary District Cricket Association (DCA), Hyderabad on a contempt of court application, filed by Ayaz Sheikh, a first class cricketer.
Ayaz, who plays for Sajjan Sports argued in the application, that secretary DCA Faheem Baig Mughal and PCB chief Shaharyar M. Khan had violated court's stay order passed on Feb 13, which refrained the two from holding matches of Hyderabad Region team in Quaid-i-Azam Trophy.
They did go ahead with organizing one day match between Hyderabad and Rawalpindi teams on March 14 in Rawalpindi and a four day match between March 15 and 18, despite having knowledge of the order.
Ayaz alleged that they had deliberately disobeyed the order even though he himself had sent them a copy of the order through fax. Ayaz's counsel Imdad Unnar, advocate stated that the two were liable to be punished.
Ayaz had filed a civil suit challenging the selection of Hyderabad Region team and claiming that the selection committee had not acted properly in picking the players.
The committee included two players in a total of 23 it had selected who had not participated in senior inter-district cricket championship and five others whose names were not mentioned in the list of sixty probables, he added.
He requested the court to declare the committee's decision as illegal, suspend schedule of Quaid-i-Azam Cup one day tournament 2003-04 and Quaid-i-Azam Trophy and direct respondents to re-select the team after conducting trials and considering players' performance.
