Munir emerges clear leader

LAHORE, March 13: Playing a flawless round, Muhammad Munir emerged as second day's leader with aggregate of six-under-par-138 in the 24th Punjab Open golf tournament professional category at the Lahore Garrison course on Saturday.
Munir scored four birdies to hand over a card of four-under- par-68 to improve his third position of first day to top.
Munir completed the first nine holes with three birdies at the 3rd, 5th and the 8th. He had only one birdie while coming back and that was at the 16th.
Mohammad Akram, struggling at fourth position with seven other contenders on opening day, also displayed improved game to chase the leader and remained behind by one stroke 139 (71,68).
Akram also earned a four-under-par-68 card with five birdies and a bogey.
He faltered at the 11th but earned birdies at the 5th, 7th, 8th, 17th and the 18th.
A double bogey at the 2nd hole and three lost strokes put the first day's leader Imdad Hussain (Garrison) down to the third place with aggregate of 140 (68+72).
Imdad was inconsistent. After a double bogey at the 2nd, he registered a birdie at the 7th to finish the first nine at one- over-37. But, he was more inconsistent while coming back, having four birdies (12th, 13th, 15th and the 18th) and three lost strokes (11th, 14th and the 16th).
The first day runner-up Shabbir Iqbal (Islamabad) went down to the fourth spot with aggregate of four-under-par-140 (69,71) to be tied with Imdad forthe third place.
Manzoor Ahmad at 142 and Abbas Ali 143 are occupying the fourth and the fifth slots.
Muhammad Iqbal and Irfan Mehmood are bracketed at the sixth spot with 144,each.
In the amateur section, Shahid Javed elevated to the first position with aggregate total of 143 (73,70).
The first day leader Dr Aimal Zaman came down to second position after playing a sluggish card of five-over-par-77 to make aggregate of 148.
At 150 (76, 74), Muhammad Safdar was at the third spot followed by Fakhar Imam who had the aggregate of 152 (78,74).
Jameela Jabbar won the two-day ladies' gross event while Samia Javed the net event.

Professional: 138-M Munir 70,68. 139- M Akram 71, 78. 140-Imdad Hussain 68,72. 140-Shabbir Iqbal 69,71. 142- Manzoor Ahmad 72,70. 143-Abbas Ali 71,72. 144-Muhammad Iqbal 72,72 and Irfan Mehmood 71,73.
Amateurs: 143-Shahid Javed 73, 70. 148- Dr Aimal Zaman 71,77. 150- M Safdar 76,74. 152- Fakhar Imam 78,74.
