Top seed Aqeel in semis

LAHORE, March 12: Top seed Aqeel Khan survived a scare before entering the semi-finals of the 19th Governor's Cup Ranking tennis tournament at Chenab Club, Faisalabad, according to a message received on Friday.

Aqeel beat sixth seed Muhammad Shafiq 6-2, 7-6 (8/6). Aqeel after winning the first set, was 4-1 down in the second. But he made a quick comeback to take the tie into the tie- breaker evetually winning 8-6.

In another exciting and well contested encounter third seed Asim Shafiq was stretched to three sets against upcoming Shahzad Khan who was playing before his home crowd. Asim won 6-4, 2-6, 7-6.

Men's Singles (quarterfinals): Aqeel Khan bt Muhammad Shafiq 6-2, 7-6; Jalil Khan bt Khalid Nazar 6-3, 7-5; Asim Shafiq bt Shahzad Khan 6-4, 2-6, 7-6; Nomi Qamar bt Kamran Khalil 6-4, 7-5. Boys Singles Under-17 (semifinals): Tanveer Ashiq bt Ahmad Aslam 6-1, 6-4; Omar Babar bt Tanveer Munir 6-0, 6-1. Men's Doubles (semifinals): Aqeel Khan-Jalil Khan bt Irfanullah- Aurangzeb Khan 6-4, 6-4; Asim Shafiq-Shahzad Khan bt Shahid Afridi-Inam Gul 6-1, 6-2.
