200 picked up during strike in Bangladesh

By Our Correspondent

DHAKA, Feb 28: Leaders and workers of the Awami League were hardly seen to picket and bring out processions on the main thoroughfares of the capital of the country during an opposition-called strike on Saturday.

Processions and picketing, which is a common feature on strike days in the country, did not take place, as law enforcers were prompt to disperse any gathering on the streets.

Police picked up more than 200 people, including former State Minister for Education Zinatunnessa Talukder and ex-MP Tahera Ali.

Still, most shops, business establishments, schools and private offices in the capital as well as at divisional headquarters remained closed, understandably due to a tense situation arising out of the government's declaration that it would use all means to clamp down on agitators.
