ISLAMABAD, Feb 28: The European Union will help Pakistan through the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in establishing scientific laboratories for maintaining the quality of her industrial products.

This was stated by Dr Carlos, the out-going head of UNIDO in Pakistan during a meeting with Mr Sohail Altaf, Vice President and Zonal Chairman, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) here on Saturday.

Dr Carlos, whose next assignment will be in Vienna, according to the FPCCI statement, stressed that Pakistan needed to gear up to meet WTO challenges in economic and social spheres and that this was the time to give proposals and make commitments.

While assuring full support of UNIDO to FPCCI, Dr. Carlos observed that there was no coordination between the various government departments and that there was a lot of duplication of efforts for the same objectives.

Mr Sohail Altaf remarked that Dr. Carlos observations should be considered by the policy makers. The UNIDO official, he said, remained active throughout his 2-year stay in Pakistan in strengthening interaction with FPCCI and the government departments.

The meeting was also attended by Mr Javed Bhatti, Sr. Vice President, Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Khalid Iqbal, Managing Committee Member, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Tehsin-ul-Haq, President, Malik Farid, former President, Haripur Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mr Swati, Senior Vice President and members of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
