KARACHI, Feb 24: The City District Government of Karachi has short listed 36 consultant firms for different projects of Tameer-i-Karachi Programme. The consultancy services have been hired in the areas of road and allied works, bridges and flyovers, geographical information system and base map, master plan, sewerage, water supply and solid waste management.

Seven consultant firms have been appointed for roads and allied works, six for bridges and flyovers, four for GIS/ base map, four for master plan, four for sewerage, five for water supply and six for solid waste management. Over 256 schemes have been identified in different sectors so far and the maximum number of schemes are planned in the water supply and sewerage sector.

The co-ordinator to city Nazim on works and services, Abid Ilyas, said that work on Tameer-i-Karachi Programme was going on at satisfactory pace and all the requirements were met within the shortest possible time. Moreover, he said that the appointment of consultant firms was another step forward for accelerating the development works in this regard.

He said that the Term of References (ToR) had also been released to the consultant firms, which had been asked to submit the ToR in mid of March. "Evaluation Committee of Tameer-i-Karachi Programme will go through the ToR, which will be submitted by consultant firms and after that a final decision would be taken," a city government official said.

FLYOVERS: The city government has decided to streamline infrastructure of the metropolis on modern lines by laying a network of flyovers to ensure a smooth flow of traffic on roads within the city and those in its suburbs.

In the first phase, an underpasses would be constructed following the completion of the FTC flyover on Sharea Faisal. The first underpass would be built near Mehran Hotel, second near Crown Plaza and third on Habib Rahmatullah Road, Karsaz.

In the second phase, flyovers would be constructed to connect Sohrab Goth, Hasan Square, Sir Shah Mohammad Suleman Road and I. I. Chundrigar Road with M. T. Khan Road.

The city government has also asked the concerned departments to put forward proposals for alternative roads in view of the reconstruction of important thoroughfares. The projects would be funded from Rs2 billion earmarked under the Tameer-i-Karachi Programme.

Work on the University Road (from Jail Chowrangi to Safoora Goth), Jahangir Road and Shahrah-i-Orangi, would be started after the completion of tender process before the end of fiscal year 2003-04. - PPI
