KARACHI, Feb 23: Describing the new local government's devolution plan as the best system for resolving people's problems, city's Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan has said that the new system has started delivering goods in the form of various developments projects.
He was speaking as chief guest at the certificate distribution ceremony held here under the aegis of the federal government's Municipal Training and Research Institute (MTRI).
The certificates were awarded to the participants of a training course, titled 'Local-level Planning', who included Nazims, Naib Nazims and municipal officers of various town and union councils of Sindh.
Highlighting the importance of the devolution, Mr Hasan said that the new system which was introduced under the Local Government Ordinance 2001, was proving beneficial for the masses.
"In fact, the system is still in its infancy and whatever shortcomings, being faced in its working, would be removed through amendments to the LGO from time to time," he said, adding that since the system was based on involving people from grassroots level, people had already started benefiting from it in the shape of flyovers, parks, green buses, street lights, better roads, etc.
Emphasizing the need for striving hard for making the new local government system a big success, he hoped that both the elected representatives and officials of local government institutions would leave no stone unturned in providing relief to the common man by resolving their lingering issues.
He also thanked MTRI Principal Afzal Arain for restarting training courses after a long gap and said that he hoped such courses would become a permanent feature of the institute.
